Food-I was founded by seven agri-food research-active organisations on the island of Ireland - the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), Queen’s University Belfast (Queen’s), Teagasc, Ulster University (UU), University College Cork (UCC), University College Dublin (UCD) and the University of Galway. Food-I was formally launched on 22nd March 2022.

The Food-I Steering Group is the governing body responsible for overseeing the activities of Food-I, providing guidance and advice on the direction, scope and strategy of the network to the Food-I Co-Chairs and Project Manager. The Steering Group is chaired by the Food-I Co-Chairs, Professor Aedín Cassidy (Queen’s) and Professor Eileen Gibney (UCD), and includes representatives from the Food-I member organisations.

Integrating a whole food systems approach, Food-I is undertaking a core research programme across four central platforms - Sustainable Food Production; Nutrition and Health; Food Safety and Integrity; and Supporting Change for a Sustainable Healthy Food System - conducting translational research spanning from food production to public health. Using model foods and ingredients selected to address specific societal challenges, Food-I will develop innovative techniques across our platforms using interdisciplinary approaches to provide end-to-end solutions from soil to society.
